Mums with Bubs Small Group Fitness Training

Sydney's Premier (and 1st) Post-natal Exercise Groups

Since 1997 JUMP START Outdoor Training has helped hundreds of new Mums regain their health and fitness, along with a lot of friendships and fun all round in their post-natal exercise groups. These ‘Mums with Bubs' (& toddlers)groups target women with babies or small children who would like to get out of the house to get some ‘me time’, and also work towards getting their old body back! It is also very cost effective for them, as there is no need to pay a babysitter as well.

Heidi, the director of JUMP START, believes the success of the program is due to keeping the groups small and personalised (no more than 6 per group). “This allows us to cater for individual physical ability, as each Mums body has gone through a different level of ‘trauma’.” The female personal trainers average about 10yrs experience, and most importantly they understand the changes a women’s body undergoes and what it is capable of after birth. Many women do not appreciate the major changes their body has been through, and the incorrect type of exercise can cause more damage than good. – eg incorrect and forceful abdominal crunch-style exercises.

My Girls Love It Just As Much (maybe more!!!!) Than Me!

"I started the Mums with Bubs classes when my 2nd daughter Ava was 6mths old. A few months later I also brought my 4yr old Grace along. She loved it so much that since then we have had to re-arrange our week so that Grace can also join us for Jump Start’s Mums with Bubs (& toddlers) classes. I have to smile, but admit, that she probably has more enthusiasm for 'training' than me! She is literally so excited to go to training and see all her other Jump Start friends, that she runs into the office, takes her pink hand weights with her, marches along to the park with us, and then all the little ones play together – it is fabulous! Grace certainly lets us Mums know if we are being too slow...although I think Lisa may have a quiet word in her ear to tell us to “hurry up". We then all go for coffee together to top off a perfect morning.” Katie Livermore, Gladesville.

Do I need exercise experience?

No, not at all. We will tailor the post natal exercise session so that you are working at the level your body is capable of, but at the same time we will challenge you so that you can achieve your goals. We are sure you will enjoy it, as well as getting all the great benefits!

Are the post natal exercise groups tailored for beginners, intermediate or advanced clients?

Sessions will be suitable for all levels. Options will be given wherever possible to make the exercises easier for beginners or for those less fit and/or strong, or harder for more experienced people.

Such A Support Network

"I trained with Jump Start up until a week before my baby was born, which I found to be
beneficial not only to my health & fitness but also to my general wellbeing. Since having my baby I train in the ‘Mums with Bubs’ group. Not only have the post natal health & fitness classes been rewarding, I also found that these groups are a great for providing a support and friends network with the other mums."

Sarah Stinson - Cammeray

What if I am really unfit and have not exercised for over a year?

Well this is why you are coming to the class! Our post natal exercise groups will allow you to take small steps to reaching your goals, and you will be supported by experienced and caring female trainers.

What are the benefits of the Mums with Bubs?

  • Reducing post-natal body fat levels.
  • Toning, defining and strengthening the upper body, which makes holding bub so much easier (especially for breast-feeding)
  • Improving the 'baby belly’.
  • Strengthening your pelvic floor, lower back, and abdominal area.
  • Improving your general health & fitness.
  • It is also a fabulous way to meet other Mums in this area who also value their health and well-being.

“Returning to activity after pregnancy has been associated with a decrease
in postpartum depression”
(Artal, 1992).

“Women who resume exercise early in the postpartum period have a shorted duration
of urinary stress incontinence than those who do not.
(Morkved & Bo, 2000).

What do I need to bring?
A towel/yoga mat, and water.  A lot of our Mums bring one of those picnic-style rugs to our post natal exercise groups. The rugs that are a blanket on one side and plastic on the other. That way bub can have some 'tummy time', and you can use the other half of the rug when you are doing the floor component of the class

What do I need to wear?
Loose fitting, layered exercise clothing - shorts, track-pants, t-shirts etc

How many in the class?

The ‘Mums With Bubs’ classes never have more than 6 Mums in each group so all individual fitness levels and goals can be accommodated. Post natal exercise groups bigger than 6 deter from the personalised factor of Personal Training, and don’t allow for individual circumstances to be taken into account

What if it rains?
If it rains the class will be held indoors in our beautiful personal training studio, so please don’t think we will send you and bub out in a thunderstorm!!!!!

What if I fall pregnant again?

Jump Start prides itself on staying up-to-date with all the most recent and safe ways to exercise during pregancy. We have lots of information hand-outs to give you when this occurs so you also feel comfortable about this. You are more than welcome to continue in the class you already have been participating in or you might like to join one of our pregnancy fitness classes.

Time Out For Me So I Am  A Better Wife and Mum

"Getting back to Jump Start was a priority for me after having my second child.  Exercising in a group session is a great release - its something just for me where I'm working on my health and fitness yet its also time away from the stresses of the house, work and the children (of course its also helping me lose the dreaded baby weight!)  It gives me a new burst of energy and the ability to cope with life's little problems - the family definitely notices how cranky I am if I miss a session!"
Victoria Hugh, Roseville

Jump Start Helped After Baby #2 & #3!

"Having been a size 10 all my life, four weeks after the birth of my second daughter I found myself a size 14. I decided I needed to take action and Jump Start was the first call I made.  After 6 months of training twice a week I had lost a total of 45 cms from all over my body and found my self-esteem and energy levels had soared. In April 2004 I fell pregnant with my third daughter and decided that I was not going to return to a size 14 post birth. I trained with Jump Start (under a carefully monitored and tailored regime) until my eighth month of pregnancy. My weight was an incredible 5 kg below that of my previous pregnancies. Ava is now six weeks old and I have started training again. I am looking forward to getting back into those size 10 clothes! Thanks again Heidi and all the team at Jump Start."

Great Doing Exercise With Other Mums and Also My Son Has Lots of New Little Friends!

"I started exercising with Jump Start when my now two year old, Lockie, was just seven months old. Jump Start appealed as I would far prefer to be outside to exercise plus I would be doing so with other mum’s and thus make friends ‘in the same boat'. Owing to the friendliness and professionalism of all the Jump Staff team I have since then enjoyed training with them three to four times a week.  After a little while I was delighted to see my fitness return and the weight drop off. Only to fall pregnant again!

I continued training at the same frequency throughout my pregnancy and felt great as the trainers modified the intensity and altered the exercises to suit my progressing condition. In fact my last training session was the day before I gave birth to my daughter Charlie. It was an easy birth and I am convinced this was in part due to the regular exercise with Jump Start. I was back doing modified exercise with Jump Start when Charlie was just six weeks old, feeling great, and now that she is ten weeks old I look forward to getting really back in shape again."

In addition to the obvious benefits of exercise, I have really enjoyed the company of the friends that I have made through ‘Mums with Bubs’ and indeed several of them were at my son’s second birthday party last week – training with Jump Start has become part of my children’s and my weekly life. As we turn the corner into Cammeray Road my son immediately starts chanting ‘Charlotte, Heather – Hooray!!!’ (the names of two of his little friends from ‘Mums with Bubs’) so I’m not the only one who enjoys it!"

Jane (Lockie and Charlies mum) - Northbridge

I realise how much better I feel, and am, day to day within myself!

"I first came across JUMP START in Sydney’s Child over 3 years ago. I was struggling with having put on weight after the birth of my daughter, feeling very unfit and feeling generally quite down about myself. Not being an outdoors person I was unsure, but the initial attraction was that Charlotte could come to the sessions with me, which meant no babysitters needed and no having to leave her in a crèche. I phoned and talked to Heidi who was so positive I decided to give it a go. I don’t think there has been any time at all that I have felt uncomfortable or self conscious about my weight/fitness level while I been training at JUMP START, and considering I am far removed from all the trim bodies of the trainers (and lots of the other members), it is a huge compliment to all that I felt right at home straight away.

Being fairly shy, doing something new doesn’t come easy, especially when it is something different for me and I didn’t know anyone. My first session with Heidi was so positive I felt great. I felt like I could achieve anything if I put my mind (and body) to it. My first ‘exercise’ session the next week, was not with Heidi, so I was a little anxious. No need to be. Bec was (and is) great. It had been a long time since I had done any serious exercise (and then only briefly), but Bec gently pushed me into it and explained the exercises as we went. Training outdoors has been great. Fresh air, a huge variety of parks, steps, walks, exercises, equipment, means that every week brings something new. I can always be assured of a smile, a good workout and great company. I now love being outdoors - even if it is for a short period of time.

Aside from the exercises, Bec is great, always ready for a friendly chat (or whinge/dump) and great with Charlotte. In no time, I was really looking forward to my Wednesdays and Charlotte was too. For a child, routine is everything, and “going to Bec’s” is part of our routine. But more than that, Bec has become our friend and if we miss a week, Charlotte misses Bec. And not just that – Wed is a day where she can catch up with her other friends, Heidi, Ken, Ben…….. not to mention the other Mums and Bubs in the class.

Over the 3 years I have been training, I have been astonished at how well Charlotte has coped and still (at age 3) sits in her pram and loves coming. I have met some of the other trainers since joining, and all are fantastic people, and have become a part of Charlotte’s world to.

I am proud of what I have achieved – in terms of fitness, my major achievement was getting to a point where I could attempt the vitality challenge (and complete it). Weight loss, flexibility, stamina are all up there too. Most of all for me though, is the great sense of achievement when I realise how much better I feel, and am, day to day within myself.
